What is it, in your opinion, that makes your neighbourhood special?
There is a whole range of original, family-run enterprises in St. Johann, many of them typical to Basel. Jakob's Basler Leckerly is one of the oldest businesses in Switzerland, the Chez Donati restaurant is legendary and international architectural firms such as Herzog & de Meuron literally shape the world from here. In St. Johann, tradition and a cosmopolitan outlook thrive side-by-side – and our gallery, which is also a family business, established 55 years ago, fits in here perfectly.
How do you and your business contribute to the appeal of this neighbourhood?
Galleries are often regarded as elitist or snobbish – not entirely without reason. We do our best to dispel that image. Our doors are open to anyone who is interested in art, regardless of whether they want to buy something or would simply like to enjoy our exhibitions.

Do you have an insider tip from the neighbourhood for us?
The Rhyschänzli restaurant has the friendliest service and the best food – our favourite dishes are the tartare and all the game dishes. The Kult bakery has the best coffee plus the most delicious temptations when you are feeling peckish. At Grimsel we always discover the loveliest objects and items of furniture. The Kannenfeld park has so many secluded corners and is a great place to retreat to – it even has a natural stage for theatre performances and live music.
What would be the best soundtrack for your neighbourhood?
