What do you think makes your neighbourhood special?

If you stand out in the public domain in front of the Rhyschänzli restaurant, you have a complete view of the dynamism that is the St. Johann quarter. Housing, gastronomy, mobility, people on the move, the leafy expanse of the Volta Park, the impressive buildings on the Novartis campus and the huge chimneys of the IWB energy company, which you can see from the Lichtstrasse. This wide-open space has a wonderfully urban feel to it which is unparalleled anywhere else in Basel.

Do you have an insider tip in your neighbourhood for us?

When I’m feeling a bit peckish in the morning, I like to go to the Brandl bakery in the Gasstrasse. And the Bartha Gallery is an exciting, many-faceted exhibition space where I feel very at home and where we have already organised a lot of great events.

How do you and your establishment contribute to the appeal of your neighbourhood?

I am convinced the Rhyschänzli makes a valuable contribution. Many people who don’t live around here have made their way to the St. Johann neighbourhood over the last 15 years thanks to us. That makes things livelier, brings people together and enriches the entire neighbourhood.

Which three adjectives best describe your neighbourhood?

Beautiful, dirty, diverse.
